My Impending Hiatus

30 April 2014

I registered for dissertation defense yesterday.

For the last eight years (or, counting back to my first few programs in 2000, the last fourteen), I have almost never been without at least one active "side project" - whether that has meant tuning out history class in high school to work on the Casio graphing calculator's version of Minesweeper, or putting off database assignments in college for the very early builds of BlameGear, or perfecting refractive lighting in my ray tracer during lunch at work. In fact, if I ever laid down my personal projects, it was only to take up others.

Nevertheless, this summer represents the final hurdle for my education. My dissertation is going to consume every bit of my free time, and for once, I'm okay with it.

What I've decided to do is wrap up development on my active projects this week, whether that's a major version, a minor version, or a patch, and get them out the door. Then, I'm shelving all actively-maintained software for the remainder of my dissertation. It's bittersweet - some of these projects may never get as much of my time as they've occupied in the past. But trading that time for getting hooded? It's a no-brainer.

My GitHub page will reflect my changes for the week. I'll see you all on the other side.
